AI-assisted modernization and AI for QA at the University of Utah.

The engagement
at a glance
- Services
- AI-assisted development, proof of concept, AI integration, QA automation, coaching
- Scope
- NorthStar modernization proof of concept; AI integration for QA and release management
- Timeline
- 2024–2025 (earlier work 2012–2015)
01
The original business problem
The University had NorthStar, a .NET system with some parts on-premise desktop installs, and wanted to see how it could become a modern, multi-tenant web app. Its QA and release-management team wanted AI built into its testing work.
02
Our approach
NorthStar: a short, fixed-scope proof of concept (about 40 hours over 2–3 weeks) that converted one selected desktop feature into a modern web app with AI-assisted development (Copilot and ChatGPT), compared old and new side by side, documented the method and refined the estimate for a full conversion. QA: architecture discovery across JIRA, Bitbucket, Jenkins, QA dashboards and Box, then a 4–6 week build of three AI capabilities.
03
What we built
- NorthStar proof of concept: one desktop feature rebuilt as a modern multi-tenant web app, with a side-by-side comparison and a full-conversion estimate
- AI that generates Gherkin automated tests from text, audio, video and tickets
- AI that watches JIRA and Bitbucket changes and suggests test updates
- AI that analyzes test-run failures and suggests fixes
- Dashboard integration, documentation and coaching for the team
